Lost World Series of Poker
X, El Salvador
El Salvador’s Zapotitán Valley is home to notable Mayan cultural heritage sites, Joya de Cerén and San Andrés. As today as in pre-Colombian times, the valley is gifted with mineral rich soil and unique geography, nestled between the Boquerón and Izalco volcanos.
Though these sites have been excavated by archaeologists, the broader valley remains relatively unexplored. Considering their proximity, Palestra believes it likely that the Zapotitán Valley is home to additional pre-Colombian structures, leaving potentially significant gaps in El Salvador’s cultural timeline.
In an effort to recover and preserve this heritage, Palestra will host a poker game with proceeds to benefit research and cultural preservation in El Salvador.
Palestra plans to perform comprehensive GPR and LiDAR scans of the Zapotitán Valley. A recent similar effort led to extensive discoveries in Mayan site Tikal, located in neighboring Guatemala.
As new scans are gathered, Palestra will open source mapping data to inform both local partners and those following from around the world. It is Palestra’s hope that, through this discovery effort, El Salvador and the world might gain a deeper understanding of our collective origin.
